International Students Health Insurance

All international students and scholars at a USG institution are required to meet the USG’s health insurance mandate.

International students who have J or F immigration status are required by the University System of Georgia to carry health insurance as a condition of enrollment at a USG institution. In addition, as part of the United States Department of State J Exchange-Visitor visa regulations, all J-1 Exchange Visitors are required by government regulations to carry health insurance for themselves and their J-2 dependents throughout the duration of their academic program. Any J-1 exchange visitor who willfully fails to maintain the insurance coverage, or makes a material misrepresentation to a USG institution concerning such coverage, will be in violation of his/her immigration status and subject to termination as a J-1.

International Students and Scholars in the F-1 and J-1 student or scholar statuses must have a minimum of the following benefits:

  • Both accident and sickness coverage
  • Minimum benefit $250,000 per policy year**
  • A deductible of $500 or less and/or co-pay per individual, per year*
  • In-patient and outpatient, mental and nervous disorder benefits
  • Prescription Drug Coverage
  • Pay benefits worldwide
  • Medical evacuation to one’s home country and family reunification of not less than $50,000*
  • Provision for repatriation of remains of not less than $25,000*
  • All Georgia mandated requirements+ *Federal Standards required for J-1 Students

**To meet Federal Affordable Care Act (ACA) requirements your health plan should have no annual benefit limits. (These requirements are based on the federally mandated requirements of the ACA.)

The University System of Georgia is pleased to be able to offer their students affordable, benefit rich Student Health Insurance Plans (SHIP). While some students are required to be enrolled in a health insurance plan and are required to have insurance that meets the minimum standards, optional enrollment in SHIP is also available to all students, their spouse and their dependents. International undergraduate and graduate students are automatically enrolled in the Student Health Insurance Plans (SHIP) as a way to meet this mandate. Each semester the Student Health Insurance (insurance premium) is added to all eligible students’ University accounts. Eligible students must enroll to activate their insurance or complete the waiver process with their own creditable insurance coverage before the deadline each semester. Once the waiver is verified and approved, the premium will be credited to the student’s account. Please check with their SHIP representative regarding the waiver period.

Students enrolled at Georgia Institute of Technology are not participating in the system-wide insurance plan.
