University System of Georgia Tuition
An open letter to parents and University System of Georgia students from Chancellor Erroll B. Davis Jr.
In today’s difficult economic climate, it is crucial that we focus on preserving the quality of the education provided by the University System of Georgia. Faced with a decrease of $274 million in state appropriations for the upcoming fiscal year, the Board of Regents has developed a tuition strategy designed to minimize the financial impact on students and families while, at the same time, maintaining academic quality.
Efforts to lessen the impact on students and their families while implementing changes that reflect today’s economic realities are the focus of the new strategy. In setting its FY2010 tuition and fee policy, the Board has worked to find the appropriate balance between controlling costs and providing the requisite resources to the colleges and universities to ensure that students continue to receive high-quality instruction.
The decisions that affect the cost of a student’s education were difficult to make. I am aware, as are the members of the Board of Regents, of the hardships many families face in this economy. By freezing tuition for new students, we have tried to respond to these conditions. Our primary goal continues to be to serve the University System’s 283,000 students with academic excellence and to preserve the high value of the investment individuals make through the System in their future.
Best wishes for success in these trying times and may our students exceed all of our expectations.
Sincerely,
Erroll B. Davis Jr.
