Curt Carver's thoughts on Performance

Performance comes from leadership, people, competence, passion, and stamina. Leadership provides the focus, integration, and prioritization necessary to discern the windows of opportunity from the hallways of distractions. People are the engines of innovation that drive performance. They are closest to the environment where changes can be sensed and acted upon. Competence comes in two forms: technical and tactical. Technical competence is core to an IT organization. To perform, we have to fundamentally understand the underlying technology so that we can leverage that technology to solve our problems. Tactically, we need to have the right mix of personal and collaborative tools to work together as a team so that we are greater than the sum of our parts. While having competence is a necessary prerequisite for performance, it is not sufficient.

Passion and stamina are necessary for real performance. The old saying goes: “find a job you love and you will never work a day in your life.” In a high-performing organization, there has to be a passion that drives performance. It is not an 8 to 5 job, but rather there is a pride in the creation of something new. This passion drives us to learn new technologies and approaches not because it is our job, but instead because it is who we are. This passion is not only for technology, but also for the people we support.

Finally, performance demands the stamina to see our projects through to completion. We deal in a highly complex environment where we will undoubtedly encounter setbacks since no one is perfect. We must plan for those setbacks, and more importantly, have the stamina to see our projects to fruition and performance.

Miller is Memorable

Lynn Miller exemplifies the ITS core values of memorable, performance and attitude in her position as a business systems analyst II with GeorgiaBEST.

“Lynn is always willing to take on a new challenge, even if it falls outside her core area of expertise,” said Debora Exum, associate director of GeorgiaBEST and Lynn’s supervisor. “I am pleased to highlight her as an outstanding staff member on the GeorgiaBEST team.”

According to Debora, Lynn is one of those people that lights up a room when she enters. She has passion for her work and it shows in the knowledge she has of Banner and Degree Works, the level of professionalism with which she engages her customers, and the camaraderie that she shares with her co-workers.

Lynn expressed how she truly enjoys the opportunity to serve the people on campuses just trying to do their job and get work done, while still serving the students. She added that she enjoys the diversity of tasks related to her job, from training functional users to working on issues via the USGTrackit. “I enjoy the constantly changing and challenging nature of student information systems software and all the related components, particularly Degree Works,” said Lynn. “Staying up to date and current on issues, trends and user preferences is very challenging!”

She noted the most exciting component of her position is the opportunity to make a difference for the campuses, thereby positively impacting students. Lynn also mentioned whether working on a ticket, preparing training materials or testing new functionality, the end result of her work always benefits students. She said her “nerdy side is satisfied” when she discovers something cool or unusual in a software product.

Lynn has been a member of the ITS team for more than nine months. She holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Piedmont College. Prior to joining ITS, Lynn was a transfer evaluation specialist at Georgia Gwinnett College.

Beech Is Committed To Excellence

Jennifer Beech exemplifies the ITS core values in her commitment to excellence in customer service, teamwork and high work performance. “I am proud to have Jennifer as a member of the Collaborative Program Services team,” said Diane Burnette, associate director of Collaborative Program Services at ITS.

Jennifer is a business systems analyst where she serves as senior analyst for the INGRESS multi-institution application. She has been a member of the ITS team since 2008. Previously, Jennifer served as a director of application systems and project manager for Cingular Wireless. She holds a master’s degree in business administration from Baruch College.

“I like working at ITS because the work we do is beneficial in preparing the next generation to realize their true potential,” said Jennifer.
