Overview

South Georgia State College, a four-year state college, is a multi-campus, student-centered institution offering high-quality associate and select baccalaureate degree programs. The institution provides innovative teaching and learning experiences, a rich array of student activities and athletic programs, access to unique ecological sites and residential options to create a diverse, globally focused and supportive learning environment.

SGSC’s 2029 strategic plan, A Renewed Vision for Student Success and Institutional Growth, serves as the foundation for teaching, learning and engagement throughout the college and community and includes six key goals:

  1. Academic Excellence: developing and delivering academic programs aligned with workforce needs while improving course access, scheduling and completion outcomes for all students.

  2. Student Engagement: enhancing student support services, advising and engagement strategies to increase retention, satisfaction and academic performance.

  3. Community Outreach: building regional partnerships to improve recruitment, dual enrollment, adult learner access and implementation of experiential learning initiatives.

  4. Career Integration: fostering deeper collaboration with industry leaders and community organizations to provide students with experiential learning and career-ready opportunities.

  5. Supportive Spaces: investing in facilities and classroom technology that create dynamic, modern learning environments and support evolving instructional needs.

  6. Financial Stewardship: ensuring affordability and long-term sustainability through efficient resource allocation, increased access to financial aid and adoption of cost-saving academic practices.

South Georgia State College is focused on a core of strong teaching and personalized academic advising. It has a long and distinguished tradition of serving the people of Georgia.

  • South Georgia State’s more than 1,900 students come primarily from southeastern and south central Georgia, but the college’s residential facilities enable the institution to draw students from other regions of the state, neighboring states and foreign countries. SGSC has locations in Douglas and Waycross, as well as an Entry Program on the campus of Valdosta State University.

  • Students pursue associate degrees in over 20 academic pathways, which transfer to other institutions, and five bachelor’s degrees in education, nursing, business management, biological sciences and mechanical engineering technology.

  • As a member of the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association and the National Junior College Athletic Association, the Hawks athletics program includes men’s basketball, women’s soccer, baseball and softball.

  • South Georgia State College had an economic impact of more than $61.9 million during FY 2023.
