UGA teacher candidate has one-on-one time with a student

Georgia has a rapidly growing population base, which represents significant ethnic and cultural diversity. The fast growth, combined with pending teacher retirements, attrition and changes in policy regarding teacher credentials, has created a critical need for large numbers of effective teachers and leaders in Georgia’s K-12 schools. Projected number of teachers needed in the classroom in the year 2020 are estimated to be 29,000.1

The University System of Georgia is aggressively addressing the challenge of preparing qualified teachers and has committed to meeting 80% of the state’s teacher needs by the year 2020. To meet this goal, the USG is using data-driven analysis and the scope and depth of the teachers preparation programs within the system, to produce record numbers of teachers who are prepared to teach in the diverse school systems across the state.
