Biological Spill Response

In the event of a spill involving biological materials, you should:

  • Wear appropriate PPE, especially gloves.
  • Remove any broken glass with tongs and place in a container of bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) or isopropyl alcohol. After 10 minutes, remove the broken glass and place it in a sharps container or broken glass box.
  • After the glass has been removed, liberally apply a bleach solution or isopropyl alcohol to the area affected by the spill and cover with paper towels.
  • Let stand for 10 minutes to allow for the destruction of the microorganisms (do not leave unattended).
  • Wipe spill and place paper towels and gloves in trash can.
  • Thoroughly wash hands.
  • Report the incident to the campus Environmental Health and Safety Office and/or Public Safety.
