Thomas A. Fanning Named Chancellor of the University System of Georgia

The Board of Regents today named longtime business leader and Georgia Tech alumnus Thomas A. Fanning as the 15th chancellor of the University System of Georgia (USG). 

Fanning, who was named the sole finalist for the position last month, succeeds Chancellor Sonny Perdue.

Board of Regents Names Thomas A. Fanning Sole Finalist for USG Chancellor

Following a comprehensive national search, the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia voted today to name Thomas A. Fanning as the sole finalist for chancellor of the University System of Georgia (USG).

Fanning is set to succeed Chancellor Sonny Perdue, who announced his retirement in April after four decades of public service, and will take the helm of one of the nation’s top public university systems with 25 public colleges and universities, more than 50,000 faculty and staff and more than 382,000 students statewide.

Sonny Perdue to Retire as Chancellor of the University System of Georgia

University System of Georgia (USG) Chancellor Sonny Perdue announced today he will retire, capping more than four decades in public service that began in Houston County and grew to include roles in the Georgia State Senate, two terms as governor and as U.S. Secretary of Agriculture.

The Board of Regents will launch a national search for the system’s next chancellor, and Perdue will continue to serve until a successor is named.
