Georgia Southern University President to Step Down

Atlanta — April 6, 1998

University System of Georgia Chancellor Stephen R. Portch announced today that he has accepted the resignation of Nicholas L. Henry, president of Georgia Southern University. The resignation will be effective June 30, 1998.

“Georgia Southern has undergone a tremendous transformation during the past several years,” said Chancellor Portch, “and President Henry has been at the leadership helm during this extremely critical and invigorating period in the institution’s history. We are extremely grateful for his years of dedicated service to Georgia Southern and to the University System.”

Portch also announced that he will appoint Dr. Harry S. Carter, provost and vice president of academic affairs at Georgia Southern, as the acting president of the institution during the 1998-99 academic year. Carter will assume the post effective July 1, 1998.

“I intend to conduct an aggressive national search for a new president,” Portch stated, “and I am extremely optimistic about the calibre of candidates that we will draw to Georgia Southern. I believe that the GSU presidency will be one of the most attractive in the nation, given the institution’s past accomplishments and where it is poised today.” Portch said that he hopes to fill the presidential vacancy no later than July 1, 1999.
