Image Acronyms

  • DPI = Dots Per Inch. This is a measure of the spatial resolution of images.
  • GIF = Graphic Interchange Format. A bitmap file format with 256 color palatte. Used for graphics rather than photographs.
  • EPS = Encapsulated Postscript. Pixel based file format widely used in graphic design.
  • TIF = Tagged Image File. A widely used file format particularly suited to the storage of high quality archive images.
  • RGB = Red Green and Blue. The three colors of light which can be mixed to make all other colors.
  • CMYK = Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black. The four ink colors of the subtractive color system used in printing.
