Partnering for Progress:
System Lends Leadership to Governor's Reform Effort

The University System of Georgia is integrally involved in Gov. Roy. Barnes' Education Reform Study Commission, the body charged with developing recommendations for improving education in the state at all levels. Early work by Chancellor Portch and key Board of Regents' staff with the statewide P-16 Council and major enhancements in the System's teacher preparation programs well positioned the University System to support the Governor's efforts to improve student achievement and teacher accountability. Such strategic positioning resulted in University System officials assuming highly visible service roles supporting the Education Commission's work. Assignments include chairing and staffing committees, and heading new administrative operations created by the omnibus HB 1187 legislation, which grew from the Commission's previous activities of a year ago.
