measuring up:

Benchmarking Spotlights
      Successes & Challenges

HOW DOES THE UNIVERSITY SYSTEM OF GEORGIA "MEASURE UP?"
That's exactly what Board of Regents Chairman Kenneth Cannestra wanted to know during his 1999-2000 term as chairman of the board. To find out, he led the movement for a massive "benchmarking" effort within the University System. Chairman Cannestra not only wanted to know how the University System stacked up against its national peers, he also wanted to identify and replicate the best practices throughout the nation. Before implementing higher education's best practices, however, the chairman knew the System must be willing to identify and acknowledge its owns shortcomings and deficiencies. Only then could a long-term strategy for tackling any special challenges be created. So, in the Fall of 1999, the process began.

"I'm especially pleased that we are willing to judge ourselves against the best in the nation, because that's what I want for all of Georgia."
      - Governor Roy Barnes
