USG to Launch System-Wide Leadership Development Program

The University System Office is launching a System-wide Leadership Development Program to proactively encourage and support leadership development of University System of Georgia (USG) administration, faculty and staff.

“Identifying, supporting and grooming high-potential University System employees is key to attracting and retaining the best talent the state, the nation and the world has to offer,” said Chancellor Erroll B. Davis Jr. “Not all of our colleges and universities have access to the needed resources to support core training and leadership development programs on their own campuses, so we will be establishing regional training hubs at strategic locations throughout the state to help offset this imbalance of resources.”

Consistent with Goal Six of the USG Strategic Plan – “Increasing Efficiency Working as a System” – and following up on the work done in 2006-2007 by former Georgia Tech President Wayne Clough’s task force on training and professional development, Vice Chancellor for Human Resources Wayne Guthrie and Assistant Vice Chancellor Tina Woodard are working with campus and University System Office staff to design the System-wide leadership development program. A number of campus presidents were asked to designate key staff members to serve on an executive steering committee for this purpose.

Six regional hubs will support uniform training and leadership development programming for USG employees, with consistent content, structure, delivery and any associated costs for all participants.

The steering committee is seeking input from campus personnel in developing courses and identifying instructors for this collaborative Leadership Development Program.

“We are out to develop a pipeline of leaders who are ready to assume more complex managerial roles, thereby ensuring the System will meet its strategic objectives,” said Guthrie.

Each USG institution will be asked to nominate two candidates from their college or university each year to participate in a 2-3-day Leadership Development Program, ideally one staff member and one faculty member, Guthrie said. Organizers hope to launch the inaugural session in October 2009.
