Stas Preczewski Named Interim President of Georgia College & State University

University System of Georgia Chancellor Erroll B. Davis Jr. announced, on June 8, that he has appointed Dr. Stas Preczewski, currently vice president for academic and student affairs at Georgia Gwinnett College (GGC), to serve as interim president at Georgia College & State University (GCSU).

Preczewski’s appointment, effective July 1, 2011, follows GCSU President Dr. Dorothy Leland’s appointment as president of the University of California, Merced. Dr. Leland has served in her position since January 1, 2004.

Preczewski has served in his current position since GGC’s founding in 2006. He was responsible for overseeing GGC’s process for initial regional accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, which was achieved in 2009; and also helped GGC obtain initial Federal Financial Aid approval. He also supervised the hiring of over 500 faculty and academic staff.

“The System is full of exceptional leadership and we are fortunate to be able to call on Dr. Preczewski to lend his talents to GCSU as we go through this transition,” said Davis. “His novel, creative and innovative leadership, as evidenced at Georgia Gwinnett, will be invaluable.”

Preczewski earned a Ph.D. specializing in higher and adult education, educational psychology and cognitive psychology from the University of Missouri in 1997. He has a Master of Arts degree specializing in strategic planning from the United States Naval War College earned in 1998 and a Master of Science degree specializing in industrial engineering and operations research from the University of Massachusetts earned in 1987. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Cornell University in agricultural engineering and economics in 1980.

Preczewski serves on the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia’s Task Force on Retention and Graduation Rates and the System’s Council on General Education. He also currently serves on the State Task Force on Gates Foundation Initiatives.

Preczewski has received a number of recognitions and awards, including a fellowship from the American Council on Education, 2003-2004, which he spent at Wake Forest University. Preczewski has also presented a number of papers, authored and co-authored studies and served as a lecturer.

Preczewski currently resides in Buford, Georgia, with his wife Jean of 30 years, and has three children: Kristen (27), Michael (26) and David (24), all currently serving as Army officers.

In the near future, plans will be announced regarding the search for the new president of Georgia College & State University.
