Gordon State College Name Approved by Regents

The Board of Regents approved on August 7 the name change of Gordon College to Gordon State College. The action follows the Board’s approval in 2006 of a change in status for the two-year college in Barnesville to allow it to offer limited baccalaureate programs within the University System’s state college sector. The name change is effective immediately.

“This request was made to the Board by Gordon President Max Burns,” said Dr. Houston Davis, the University System of Georgia’s executive vice chancellor and chief academic officer. “It reflects the reality of the College’s hard work to develop and put in place select bachelor’s degree programs that serve the region’s workforce needs and the name change is both well-deserved and appropriate.”

As a state college, Gordon developed a new mission that was previously approved by the Board. While offering seven baccalaureate degree programs, the College retains its two-year college access mission. Currently, students can earn bachelor’s degrees in early childhood education, English, biology, history and mathematics, all of which can lead to a teaching certificate, as well as bachelor’s degrees in nursing and health informatics.
