GGC and SPSU Teams Win a Chance at $50,000 in Start-up Funds

Student teams from Georgia Gwinnett College (GGC) and Southern Polytechnic State University (SPSU) both won a chance to compete for $50,000 in start-up money during the March 3 Social Business Workshop initiated by the University System of Georgia (USG). The teams will participate in the 10-week Village Capital-Atlanta Funding Competition held this beginning in April and concluding in June.

Other participating teams in the March workshop included: Fort Valley State University, Gainesville State College, Georgia State University and Valdosta State University. These teams were chosen as the best among 38 that participated last October in the USG Georgia Social Business and Microcredit Forum, a statewide social business plan competition.

GGC and SPSU students were mentored by a small group of venture capitalists and then presented their plans and answered questions from other venture capitalists.

GGC’s plan, Read4Life!, is designed to eradicate adult literacy. The team included Adam Herbert, Shalaya Morissette, Kathy Cheng, Sasha Ruiz and Elizabeth Smith. GGC’s advisor was Mr. Robert Anservitz, assistant professor of marketing. SPSU’s plan, Restoration Trust, would help battered women break the cycle of violence. Their team included Sonal Doshi, Fred Arnold, Christ Estrada, Becky Stringer and Joelle Day. SPSU’s advisor was Dr. Donald Ariail, associate professor of accounting.

The workshop was hosted by GGC in collaboration with the USG and TiE-Atlanta, “a non-profit organization whose mission is to foster entrepreneurship and to nurture the next generation of entrepreneurs.”
