Middle Georgia College Receives CUPA-HR’s First-Ever Community Service And Outreach Award

Middle Georgia College has been chosen as the first recipient of the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources (CUPA-HR)’s new Community Service and Outreach Award. Rooted in CUPA-HR’s ongoing commitment to service and volunteerism, the Community Service and Outreach Award was created to recognize the efforts of institutions to engage their employees through community service and outreach. Middle Georgia College received the award for its Partners in Excellence program. Thanks to the generous support of Fidelity Investments, CUPA-HR is pleased to offer a $10,000 contribution to Middle Georgia College’s endowment.

The Partners in Excellence program created a partnership between Middle Georgia College employees and the local primary, elementary and middle schools to provide educational resources to strengthen student academic performance and achievement. Components of the program include a reading initiative (in which college employees visit the local primary schools once a week to read to students); a mentoring initiative (in which college employees mentor elementary and middle school students throughout the school year); and an awards initiative (in which college employees prepare and present certificates for superior academic performance and citizenship to students at the primary and elementary schools). The Partners in Excellence program has also served to provide the students of this small, rural community, many of which come from families with limited financial resources and no college education, with a connection to higher education. The partnership has drawn community-wide attention and is regularly acknowledged in the weekly local newspaper.

The Partners in Excellence program is part of Middle Georgia College’s ongoing efforts to create a comprehensive culture of service that supports the needs of the community and the students the college serves.
