Student Health Insurance Program (SHIP)
Mandatory SHIP Categories
The following students are required to have student health insurance that meets the minimum standards set by the University System of Georgia. Students in these categories who are not covered by a policy held by a parent, spouse, company or organization on the approved waiver list or if the policy does not meet the minimum standards must purchase the USG SHIP policy.
- All graduate students receiving a Full Tuition Waiver as part of their graduate assistantship award.
- All undergraduate, graduate and ESL international students holding F or J visas.
- All undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in programs that require proof of health insurance.
- All graduate students receiving fellowships that fully fund their tuition.
- International Scholars.
Students who fall into one of these categories and are already covered by an insurance policy (i.e. through parent plans, family plans or employer-sponsored plans) can easily opt out of the plan through a secure on-line process. Once the information has been verified, all charges will be waived. Students (both undergraduate and graduate) who fail to submit creditable health insurance information will automatically be enrolled in and billed for the system-wide student health insurance plan. Check with your campus for the exact deadline dates for submitting a waiver. The waiver periods at our institutions are strictly enforced.
Georgia Institute of Technology does not participate in the system-wide insurance plan.
What are the Minimum Requirements?
The University System of Georgia requires all students in the above categories to have reasonable, comparable, creditable coverage to the current system-wide student health insurance plan provided. The following benefits must be included in your plan to be considered for a waiver.
- Both accident and sickness coverage
- Minimum benefit $500,000 per policy year
- Coverage for all pre-existing conditions
- Reasonable deductible ($3,000 or less) and/or co-pay per individual, per year
- In-patient and outpatient, mental and nervous disorder benefits
- Prescription Drug Coverage
- Pay benefits worldwide
- Medical evacuation to one’s home country and family reunification of not less than $10,000*
- Provision for repatriation of remains of not less than $7,500*
- All Georgia mandated requirements
Georgia mandates coverage for the following benefits to be paid as any other Sickness:
maternity expense and routine newborn care, including 48 hours care in a Hospital or birthing facility following a normal vaginal delivery and a minimum 96 hours following a cesarean section. If a mother and newborn are discharged prior to the post partum inpatient length of stay, coverage includes up to 2 Post-Partum Visits, provided that the first such visit shall occur within 48 hours of discharge; Benefits for Diabetes, Mammography, Pap Smears, Chlamydia Screening; Mastectomy Benefits; Dental Anesthesia Benefits; Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) tests; Treatment of Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction; and any other applicable mandated benefits.

If I am in a mandatory category, do I actually need to enroll myself in the system wide plan in order for my insurance to be active?
If you are in one of the above mandatory groups that must have student health insurance, you will be automatically enrolled in the United Healthcare insurance after your institutions enrollment and waiver period ends. If proof of insurance is needed sooner than this, you should enroll online and print your insurance card.
What does United Healthcare cover?
Please go back to the institution website section above and click on your institution, from there you will find a benefit summaries outlining coverage.
Is the insurance provided by United Healthcare compliant with the new health care reform requirements?
Yes, the plan is compliant with all current reform requirements and will continue to be fully compliant with all future provisions prior to the effective date of each. The System plan also meets the requirements of the individual mandate that individuals must have health insurance.
My student account has been charged for the insurance but I haven’t received my insurance card yet, what should I do?
Please go to the system-wide United Healthcare web site and click on your institution. Once on your institutions customize site you should find a paragraph of bold red type that asks if you wish to confirm your enrollment. In this paragraph there should be an Enrollment Form link. It is a best practice to complete this step to ensure that you are enrolled. If you do not take these steps, your insurance card will be mailed to your address after the enrollment and waiver period closes.
If I am in one of the mandatory groups does paying my student account bill automatically enroll me in the student health insurance? No, as explained in the previous question.
How do I apply for a waiver?
Students who already have comparable insurance coverage can apply to waive the insurance requirement. A comparable plan is one that meets the minimum requirements indicated in the above list. Your plan will be verified to determine if your coverage meets the minimum requirements. To apply for a mandatory insurance waiver go to: www.studentcenter.uhcsr.com search for your institutions name, and click continue. On the next webpage there will be a Waiver Form link for your institution.
Waivers are valid for one semester only! Students will have to submit a new waiver each semester.
My waiver is denied, now what?
If your waiver has been denied once, you can resubmit a waiver following the same steps as above one more time. Double check that all information you submitted is correct.
If you have submitted two waivers and you have been denied twice, and wish to appeal, you may email email@example.com to submit your appeal. Please include all necessary information regarding your insurance policy. You may wish to obtain a “fact sheet” or “certificate of insurance” document regarding your policy coverages directly from your insurance company and submit with your appeal, this would assist in the verification process.
If you do not apply for a waiver or if your waiver is declined you will automatically be enrolled in the plan at the end of the waiver period and the cost of the policy will appear on your student account.
