Recently Separated Military Service Personnel Tuition Waivers (FAQ)

[Board of Regents Policy 704.041 Q: Out-of State Tuition Waviers - Recently Separated Military Personnel (June 2004)]

Who is eligible?
Any member of the armed forces who separated from active duty within the last 12 months.

What documentation is required?
Copy of military discharge papers.

What is their residency status classification for System reporting?
Non-Resident. The student must follow the campus procedures for petitioning residency status within the required 12 month period.

How long is the waiver good for?
Twelve months from the first term of enrollment after separation. This will enable former active military personnel the opportunity to continue paying in-state fees during the next 12 months while they establish residency.

Must the individual be stationed in Georgia at the time of separation to be eligible for the waiver?
No. However, the individual must provide documentation at the time of enrollment that he/she has established or is in the process of establishing residency in the state.

Must the student be formally admitted into a teacher education program?
Yes. Students must be formally accepted into a program (traditional or alternative) that leads towards certification or prepares them to teach. These programs are available at the following institutions:
Albany State University, Armstrong Atlantic State University, Augusta State University, Clayton College & State University, Columbus State University, Fort Valley State University, Georgia College & State University, Georgia Southern University, Georgia Southwestern State University, Georgia State University, Kennesaw State University, North Georgia College & State University, University of Georgia, University of West Georgia, and Valdosta State University

What is the effective date for this wavier?
Winter 2003.

Can students enrolled Fall term petition for this waiver?
Yes. The waiver period begins with the Winter 2003 term. Students must be able to document their separation date and their intent to establish residency. These students are not eligible for a refund of out-of-state tuition for Fall term.
