Action

Develop a more intentional approach to recruiting, developing, and rewarding faculty for excellence in teaching.

Activities for Implementation

  • Develop BOR policies that reward student advising, experiential learning, mentoring, instructional innovation, scholarship of teaching and learning, scholarship of engagement, and collaborative institutional planning to improve student learning.
  • Create Regents’ Distinguished Faculty title in recognition of outstanding undergraduate instruction.
  • Provide System-level professional development opportunities in the area of teaching.
  • Continue providing awards each year for excellence in teaching; expand number of awards as funding allows.

Little System-wide activity specifically focused on providing incentives for excellence in teaching, providing professional development opportunities related to teaching, and/or providing rewards for excellence in teaching.

Review USG policies related to teaching and revise as needed to focus on incentives and rewards. Section 4 (Academic Personnel) of the Academic Affairs Handbook revised and updated
Develop and conduct at least three additional workshops for professional development for faculty (fall 08). Conducted 8 workshops in 2008-2009. Nearly 300 faculty attended on-site and over 5,000 visited recorded sessions on website.
Offer one departmental award and five individual faculty awards for excellence in teaching. All FY2009 award winners were selected and honored at March 2009 USG Gala.
Establish a Regents' Distinguished Teaching Faculty title in recognition of outstanding teaching. Funding not available beyond 6 awards given annually.
Continue to offer annual Academic Administrators Workshop. Due to budget constraints, planning is underway to offer professional training for academic administrators in the form of campus-based and virtual workshops.

Recommend policy changes identified through review. Policy change recommendations currently being developed in the areas of faculty development and work in the schools/scholarship of teaching and learning.
Develop and conduct at least six professional development workshops. Conducted 7 workshops in 2009-2010 USG Faculty Development Monthly Series. Location of the workshop moved to OIIT Athens for a budget savings of over $25,000. Attended on-site by 150 faculty and all sessions were recorded and archived on the USG iTunes site.
Offer one departmental award and five individual faculty awards for excellence in teaching. All FY2010 award winners were selected and honored at the March 2010 USG Gala.
Establish process and criteria for selection of a Regents' Distinguished Teaching Faculty award. Funding not available beyond 6 awards given annually.
Identify experts across the System in the scholarship of teaching and learning who can serve as resources. Expertise database from USG experts developed by the Office of Faculty Development. March 2010 workshop was offered by Georgia Southern faculty on the scholarship of teaching and learning.
Support and co-sponsor existing annual teaching conferences sponsored by KSU, GSOU, GSC. Staff from the Office of Faculty Development attended and participated in all USG teaching conferences this past year.
