University System of Georgia Strategic Plan

Strategic Goal Four:
Strengthen the USG’s partnerships with the state’s other education agencies.

Challenge

National and international competitiveness demands a better educated citizenry and workforce. US needs to close two degree gaps to match best performing nations (international competitiveness benchmark: 55% of adults, aged 25-64 with college degrees, AS or higher):

  1. Degree gap between US and competitors: A 37% annual increase in US degree production needed (AS or higher), or about 781,000 more degrees per year, 2007-2025. At current growth rate, US will reach 44.8% by 2025.
  2. Degree gap between minorities and non-minorities in US: 10.6 million more minority degrees needed to match Whites; 31.6 million more minority degrees needed to reach 55% benchmark.

Action

Make postsecondary education affordable and attainable, USG action: Increase productivity (number of degrees produced per students enrolled for dollars spent) in USG from 2007-2025 through the State’s Making Opportunity Affordable Initiative.

Activities for Implementation

  • Implement multiple activities (in cooperation with other state partners) designed to increase the over-all percentage of the adult population in Georgia with college degrees through multiple activities designed to increase productivity.

  • Implement multiple activities (in cooperation with other state partners) designed to increase the college degree attainment of Blacks and Hispanics through strengthening the capacity of TCSG and USG to serve well a more diverse student population.
