Georgia Southern University Faculty Member Honored By United States Congress
The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia would like to congratulate Dr. Karl E. Peace who was honored on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives for his numerous professional and charitable contributions. Peace is a Georgia Cancer Coalition Distinguished Cancer Scholar, Senior Research Scientist and Professor of Biostatistics in the Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health at Georgia Southern University. Rep. Robert Wittman (R-VA) who cited Peace’s numerous contributions to drug research and development, public health, biostatistics and philanthropy presented the honor.

Georgia Power Supports Teacher Retention through New Teacher Awards
Twenty-nine deserving USG Educator Preparation graduates were awarded $1,000 from Georgia Power to purchase classroom supplies and equipment not furnished by their schools. Georgia Power began the awards program in 2004 to encourage new teachers to stay in the classroom. The Board of Regents wishes to thank Georgia Power for supporting USG-prepared teachers and working to fortify teacher retention in Georgia’s classrooms. The BOR Office of Educator Preparation, Innovation and Research has cited teacher retention as one of the key strategies for the 20,000 by 2020 Initiative, which is focused on meeting 80% of the state’s need for teachers by the year 2020.

North Georgia College and State University
The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia would like to congratulate North Georgia College & State University on being named the nation’s top-performing senior military college in the U.S. Army’s recently released National Order of Merit List. Additionally, of the country’s 4,702 cadets ranked on this year’s list, six North Georgia cadets placed in the top 10 percent. The annual list ranks cadets in more than 270 Army ROTC programs, based on performances at the Army’s Leadership Development Assessment Course at Fort Lewis, Wash., physical fitness, campus leadership performance and academic achievement.

Darton College Wins Conserve Georgia Award
The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia would like to congratulate Darton College on being named a winner of the 2009 Conserve Georgia’s Natural Leaders Awards. The Conserve Georgia Awards recognize those helping to create a culture of conservation through energy, land, wildlife and water conservation; the improvement of air quality; the prevention of litter; and the promotion of recycling. Governor Perdue started Conserve Georgia with the goal of encouraging a statewide culture of conservation that helps preserve and sustain the state for generations to come. Alternative Media Access Center (AMAC)
The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia would like to congratulate the USG’s Alternative Media Access Center (AMAC) on the launch of the AccessText Network. AMAC and the Association of American Publishers (AAP) have worked collaboratively to develop and launch the network, a comprehensive, national online system that promises to make it easier and quicker for students with print-related disabilities to obtain the textbooks they need for their college courses.
