Fuchko To Present Fee Proposal To Regents Tuesday
February 7, 2000 (Atlanta) - Student Advisory Council Chair John M. Fuchko III will be presenting a proposal to the Board of Regents Tuesday which would dramatically increase student control over the creation and budgeting of mandatory student fees at Georgia's 34 public colleges and universities.
If adopted, the plan would require all University System of Georgia institutions to establish a committee comprised of at least 50% students, appointed by student governments, to examine yearly each mandatory student fee and submit recommendations to the institution president and the Board of Regents regarding any fee increase and a proposed budget for each fee. Currently, such committees are in place only for student activity fees.
The change has been requested by the Student Advisory Council for nearly ten years, and is moving forward as a result of Governor Barnes' push for greater student control over fees in the wake of the recent HOPE scholarship controversy.
"This is a tremendous leap forward in our efforts to share in the governance of our University System." Said Fuchko, "This change will insure the future of HOPE and allow students a stronger voice in determining the cost of education in Georgia."
The Student Advisory Council to the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia (SAC) is the official representative body of the more than 200,000 students of the University System, consisting of the student body president or appointed delegate from each of Georgia's 34 public colleges and universities. SAC considers issues affecting students and makes recommendations to the Board of Regents, the Georgia Legislature, and the Governor.
