Waycross College Naming Guidelines

Waycross College wishes to honor donors who make significant gifts to the general endowment of the Waycross College Foundation. One such honor is the naming of a building, space or street in accordance with the donor's wish. The following guidelines will be used in approving the name of a building or specific area in a building or on college property. In all such decisions Waycross College shall follow Board of Regents policy 912.

  1. For future privately funded physical facilities, a donor who donates at least 50 percent of the construction cost may name the building upon recommendation of the President of Waycross College and approval of the Board of Regents.
  2. For existing physical facilities that are unnamed, a donor who contributes at least $1 million may name the facility upon recommendation of the President of Waycross College and approval by the Board of Regents.
  3. For spaces within buildings or on the grounds, naming opportunities and amounts will be determined by the President of Waycross College. Some spaces, such as streets, quadrangles, and recreation fields require approval by the Board of Regents.
  4. A desire to have a named space may be specified with a gift of 25% of the amount needed and a pledge to complete the gift within four years. The space will be named when the gift is completed but will be reserved for that donor for the length of the pledge.
  5. A physical facility, space or street may be named for an individual who has provided outstanding service to the institution, to the nation, or to society, and has served with distinction. Any person who has been in public service must have been disassociated from employment by or service to the University System of Georgia, or from state or federal government, for at least two years prior to the naming. The two-year waiting period may be waived if the honoree is deceased. The requirement of donations may be modified or waived by the President. Careful consideration shall be given each name recommended, advice sought, and the utmost discretion used to ensure that those upon whom such an honor is bestowed are truly worthy. Each recommendation shall be considered on its own merit and no precedent shall be assumed by any name or names recommended and approved. The President's Council shall serve as a naming advisory committee to make recommendations to the President.
  6. The President is the final arbiter of all decisions related to naming. In all cases the President of Waycross College shall endeavor to ensure that the proposed naming is consistent with the interests of the institution and the University System.
  7. A name may be removed from a named space at the order of the President of Waycross College. The order will have the approval of the Board of Regents in the case of facilities or streets. Removal of a name shall occur only in case of failure to maintain the high standards of the institution or other such appropriate reasons. The naming of a building will last no longer than the useful life of the building itself.
  8. Any signs, plaques, or other recognition of a named building or spaces within buildings or on the grounds shall be consistent with Board of Regents policies 908.03 and 917 and the Waycross College Master Plan.
  9. All namings pursuant to this policy and the policy itself are subject to periodic review to determine that the naming continues to be consistent with the interest of Waycross College and that financial commitments expected for future namings are appropriate.
