North Georgia College & State University Naming Guidelines

Policy for Naming of Facilities and Streets

Authority for naming North Georgia College & State University facilities and streets is vested in the Board of Regents. The Board of Regents considers the naming of a University facility or street in honor of a living or deceased individual, corporation, foundation, or organization to be one of the highest distinctions that it can bestow. The President and Vice Presidents will have the responsibility for recommending and evaluating proposed names to the Board of Regents. This policy attempts to assure that a fair and reasonable process is applied when suggesting potential names for the facilities and streets on the North Georgia College & State University campus.

The term "facility" is intended to include buildings of all types, as well as all sports facilities. It is also intended to include all outdoor areas that may not have physical walls but are nonetheless identifiable areas of campus landscape, such as quadrangles, gardens, lakes, recreation fields, etc. The term "facilities" does not include interior spaces, such as rooms, hallways, etc., within buildings and sports facilities. The Board of Regents delegates authority to the institution presidents to name such interior spaces. The Board of Regents will be notified for informational purposes only on any such interior space naming on a timely basis.

  1. Each campus facility and street will have an official name. All references made in University publications and on maps and signage will use the official name for campus facility and street.
  2. The selected name for a campus facility should incorporate the activity to be housed whenever possible, i.e., the Pennington Military Leadership Center.
  3. It is the intent in the naming of facilities and streets to consider names of individuals, corporations, foundations, or organizations exemplifying the values for which North Georgia College & State University stands.
  4. When naming is to honor a living person for outstanding and distinguished service as a public servant, that person must have been disassociated from employment by or service to the University or from state or federal government employment for at least two years prior to the naming.
  5. If a facility or street is proposed for naming for an individual, corporation, foundation, or organization in connection with a major gift to the University, the following guidelines will apply:
    1. The gift must equal 25% of the construction costs on a new building or 25% of the estimated value of an existing building.
    2. If the facility, as defined above, is not a building, then the gift must equal 50% of the construction cost or 50% of the estimated value of the facility.
    3. When a potential donor proposes construction of a new facility or renovation to an existing facility, then the associated gift should cover the costs of construction or renovation. Exceptions may be made with the approval of the President of the University.
  6. If interior space is proposed for naming in connection to a major gift to the University, then the following guidelines apply to:

  8. Nonacademic facilities and streets may also be named on the basis of primary use, location or for an individual, or in the case of athletic facilities, in recognition of the primary sports conducted therein.
