In an effort to recognize significant contributions or service to the institution, Georgia Highlands College may name buildings, building components or streets in honor of an individual, organization or corporation. In all cases, Board of Regents Policy 912: Names of Facilities or Streets takes precedence over the following policy.
A named gift sends a strong message to students, faculty, staff and the community-atlarge regarding the significant contribution of an individual, organization or corporation.
The Named Giving Guidelines address suggested minimum investments for: 1) existing buildings; 2) building components; and 3) streets. The Guidelines address the "outstanding service" standard for naming which is included in the USG BOR Policy 912. Recommended names for facilities may be presented by the president to the BOR upon receipt and deposit of a donation equal to 10% of the total gift being pledged for the naming opportunity. Proposed names for facilities and streets must be approved by the BOR, whether those names are intended to honor an individual, corporation, foundation, or organization or to memorialize a deceased individual. Given the public recognition associated with the policy and such opportunities, this document also includes a provision for de-naming/name removal.
Signage for named building must follow Board of Regents Policies 908.3 and 917 as well as be consistent with the Institution's Master Plan.
The information contained in this document will establish guidelines regarding named giving opportunities for the benefit of the college, foundation and potential donors.

Refer to University System of Georgia Board of Regents Policy "912 Names of Facilities or Streets" (attached as Exhibit 1.)
It is the intention of the college and foundation to solicit donations for named giving opportunities in accordance with the USG BOR Policy 912. Requests and donations related to named giving opportunities will be reviewed by the college president, President's Cabinet, foundation board and forwarded to the BOR for review, prior to acceptance of such gifts.
Named Giving requests may be generated at the foundation or institution; however, the first level of review and recommendation will be the responsibility of the institutional naming (advisory) committee. The President's Cabinet will serve as the institutional (advisory) naming committee to make recommendations to the President. The president is the final arbiter of all decisions related to naming.
Following approval by the BOR for naming a facility, the institution will plan appropriate recognition ceremony or activities and will notify the Chancellor of such ceremony or event at an early date.
In the event that a benefactor is convicted of a felony or defaults on financial commitments, the benefactor's name may be removed following a review by the president, foundation board and BOR. This review would apply to situations in which the benefactor's name is publicized in connection with the institution (including, but not limited to named facilities and streets).
The act of naming is the conferral of not only a high honor but also a conspicuous honor. It publicly exhibits the judgment and standards of the University System of person being honored. Therefore, a review may be warranted if the "lasting approval" is deemed questionable as a result of disclosure of inappropriate or dishonorable actions by the benefactor (past, present or future). De-naming may become necessary in circumstances wherein there is failure to maintain the high standards of the institution or the System – high standards on which the original naming honor was based.
The following steps would be implemented upon conviction of felony charges, default on naming payments or public disclosure of inappropriate or dishonorable activities by the benefactor:
The naming of a building will extend only through the useful life of the building. Demolition of a building may be necessary for a variety of reasons, and, in the case of demolition of a building, the name of the structure may be changed, creating another naming opportunity.
Georgia Highlands College will conduct an annual review of naming guidelines to ensure compliance with Board of Regents policies.
Deferred gifts accepted for the purpose of named giving are irrevocable.
This draft incorporates revisions made following review by the Foundation Executive Committee (3-11-05) board (3-17-05) and President's Cabinet (4-18-05 and 5-16-05). On 7-29-05, the draft was changed to reflect instructions contained in memorandums from USG Chancellor Meredith (dated 8-19-04 and 7-19-05). On September 22, 2005, the draft was changed to reflect recommendations received from the BOR based on their review of the GHC policy. The recommendations were contained in a memorandum from Elizabeth E. Neely dated September 12, 2005. The revised policy was forwarded to Ms. Neely's office on September 23, 2005.
