Darton College Naming Guidelines
Purpose:
The purpose of this procedure is to develop campus-wide naming guidelines for implementing BOR Policy 912 Names of Facilities and Streets at Darton College.
General: Significant gifts to the College through the Darton College Foundation will provide opportunities for donors to designate the name of a program, facility, unit, scholarship, or other item in honor of the donor or another person. In order that the Darton College Foundation may properly administer funds, each gift must be accompanied by a gift agreement that has been approved by the donor or his/her representatives, the Foundation, the President of the College and, in some cases, the University System of Georgia Board of Regents. The amounts listed are minimums. Gift amounts must be approved by the Director of Development and the President prior to discussion with any donor. Any exceptions to these guidelines must be approved by the President of the College and submitted to the Chancellor's office for review and approval. The College has also established procedures for naming certain items covered by these naming guidelines for reasons other than private giving. This occurs when some individual merits recognition due to his/her academic or service contributions to Darton College.
These naming guidelines are intended to be in accord with Board of Regents Policy 912 adopted by the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia in May, 2004. Should discrepancies or changes develop, the BOR's Policy 912 shall prevail, and any provision in conflict therewithin shall be null and void.
Definitions:
Facilities: Buildings of all types as well as sports facilities. Also includes all outdoor areas that may not have walls, but are nonetheless identifiable areas of the campus landscape. The term "facilities" does NOT include interior spaces such as rooms, hallways, etc.
Interior Spaces: Classrooms, hallways, laboratories, etc. contained within facilities

Such recommendations must be submitted to the Director of Development along with justification and any explanatory materials. In the case of a new facility or renovation for which private support will be sought, the justification must explain how recognition for lead gifts will be handled and/or the fact that no gifts that would qualify for naming are expected.
De-Naming/Name Removal/Termination of Naming
De-naming or name removal may become necessary in circumstances such as failure to follow through on a financial commitment, failure to maintain high standards of Darton College, or for other appropriate reasons. The President of the College, in coordination with the BOR, retains the authority to de-name any facility, interior space, or other named endowment should it become necessary to do so.
No assurances are given to donors that the naming will remain beyond the useful life of the building, space, program, unit or other naming opportunity described herein. Should the named entity be terminated, there may be another opportunity for naming.
Periodic Review
These guidelines will be reviewed biannually in February by the President and the Executive Council of Darton College.
