Coastal Georgia Community College Naming Guidelines

Naming Guidelines for College Spaces

Coastal Georgia Community College considers the naming of a University System facility or street in honor of an individual or organization to be one of the highest distinctions that it can bestow. In view of the importance and magnitude of this honor, the following guidelines shall apply to the naming of all facilities and streets on all property owned or leased by Coastal Georgia Community College. In addition to buildings of all types, the term "facility" applies to identifiable exterior areas of the campus landscape, such as the lake, bell tower, plazas, par course, recreation fields, and major pedestrian walkways, etc. The term "facilities" does not include interior spaces such as classrooms, labs, hallways, auditoriums, libraries, etc. The Board of Regents in Policy 912 has reserved the authority to name facilities and streets based upon the carefully considered recommendation from the institution and has delegated authority to the President of Coastal Georgia Community College to name interior spaces.

  • A building, interior space, or street may be named for a person (living or dead) who has provided truly outstanding service to the institution, the nation or society in general. Any person who has been in public service must have been disassociated from employment by or service to the University System of Georgia, or from state or federal government employment for at least two years prior to the naming. The two-year waiting period may be waived for a deceased honoree.
  • Several types of naming opportunities are available to the benefactors of the Coastal Georgia Community College Foundation with minimum amounts as follows:
Construction of New Facilities 20% of project budget
    Naming of Existing Buildings $1,000,000
High Visibility Spaces (Auditoriums, Libraries) $250,000
Science, Nursing, and Computer Labs $100,000
Unnamed Streets, Campus Landscape Areas $100,000
    Classrooms, Bookstores, Conference Rooms $50,000
    Offices $25,000
  • Any donor wishing to specify a naming opportunity must provide at least 25% of the gift at the time of the request with a pledge to complete the gift within three years. The space will be officially named when the gift is fully received but will be reserved for the donor during the time of the pledge, subject to the approval of the President and the Board of Regents, if applicable.
  • The President of Coastal Georgia Community College shall insure that proposed namings associated with monetary gifts are consistent with the mission and interests of the institution and the University System. There shall be no assurances given to donors that the naming will remain beyond the useful life of the building.
  • Signage recognizing the donor will be consistent with the College Master Plan and in conformity with sections 908.3 and 917 of the Policy Manual of the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia.
  • The President of Coastal Georgia Community College reserves the right to remove a name from a named space. Removal of a name shall occur in case of the failure of the donor to maintain the high standards of the institution or the University System or for other appropriate reasons. If the naming of the space required approval of the Board of Regents, then the name will be removed with approval of the Board of Regents.
  • Institutional guidelines regarding the naming of facilities will be reviewed and updated on a periodic basis.
