Atlanta Metropolitan College Naming Guidelines
In accordance with Board of Regents Policy 912, Names of Facilities or Streets, Atlanta Metropolitan College proposes the following guidelines for naming buildings and streets to honor individuals and corporations:
For living persons:
- Person must have provided truly outstanding service to the institution, the nation or society in general.
- For public servants, the person must have been disassociated from employment by or service to the USG, or from state or federal government employment for at least two years prior to the naming.
For deceased persons:
- Same basic standard as for living person, except the two-year waiting period may be waived upon the person's death.
For monetary donations:
- The Presidents of each USG institution shall be responsible for ensuring that proposed namings associated with monetary gifts are consistent with the interests of the institution and the System. Deferred gifts, monetary, and/or other, we irrevocable. A sum of at least 50% of a gift must be received by the institution before a recommendation can be made to the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia.
- The Chancellor and the Board of Regents shall be notified, as far in advance as possible, of any event or ceremony in which an individual or entity is to be recognized for gifts, donations, or services in conjunction with the naming of building or facilities.
- Buildings
- New – donation of 25% of cost or more for individuals and 50% for corporations or other entities.
- Existing – extraordinary service to the institution for individual or 50% of appraised value of structure for corporations or other entities.
- A building, a part of a building, or street shall not bear the name of an honoree beyond useful life.
- Signage practices and standards shall comply with the spirit and letter of Board of Regents Policies 908.3 and 917 as well as applicable elements of the institution's approved facilities master plan.
- Portions of Buildings
- Wings
- Extraordinary service to the institution for individual or 25% of appraised value of structure for corporations or other entities.
- Rooms
- Conference/Meeting - extraordinary service to the institution for individual or $100,000 donation for individual and $200,000 for corporations or other entities.
- Single-purpose — donation totaling at least 25% of operating cost of program for a minimum of five years for individuals and 50% for corporations and other entities.
- Wings
- Streets
- Significant, sustained service and other advancement-related contributions to the college for individuals. Not applicable for corporations or other entities.
De-Naming / Name Removal:
- The name of an honoree may be removed for failure to comply with a pledge or financial commitment or for a failure to maintain acceptable moral or legal standards.
The president of the institution shall be the final arbiter of all decisions related to naming. There shall be a standing committee, appointed by the president, to make recommendations to the president concerning all matters related to naming facilities. At least once in each three-year period, the committee shall effect a comprehensive review of institutional guidelines for naming, de-naming, or removal of names associated with facilities.
