National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Mathematics - Science Data Initiative

Georgia is striving to improve student achievement through all levels of education, especially in science and mathematics. Georgia's mathematics and science scores on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) tests as well as the state's Criterion Referenced Competency Tests (CRCT) illustrate the need for improving student achievement. These test data also indicate considerable achievement gaps among racial/ethnic groups. Additionally, the test data show a decline from elementary school to middle school in the percentage of students meeting or exceeding standards in mathematics and science. Georgia has several initiatives underway to increase student achievement and to promote college participation. The NASA project supports two important areas that have yet to be adequately addressed regarding key issues affecting the pipeline of students pursuing education and careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields.

Recent Publications/Deliverables:

  • This project will develop data analysis software and data systems that will enable a fine-grained analysis of standardized science and mathematics educational test data by using powerful analytical tools in order to address student achievement. The newly developed and deployed decision support system will be based on mathematics and science student test and subtest data and will be integrated with extensive data from science and mathematics educational initiatives Georgia has underway. This knowledge, coupled with a close association to PRISM, will allow development of best practices to target educational interventions and strategies to better address the needs of students.

  • This project will provide high school students interested in a STEM career with additional resources to better plan an education path that will lead them to their desired career goals, career-related standardized tests will be evaluated, purchased, and made available to students throughout the state. After selecting the most advantageous STEM career test service, it will be deployed in GO centers throughout the state. Coupled with existing state efforts on promoting high education outcomes and careers in science and mathematics, this initiative will help Georgia produce more highly-trained science and mathematics professionals.
