Birth-Age 5 Teacher Preparation Consortium

The purposes of the Birth-Age 5 Teacher Preparation Consortium is to promote the development of baccalaureate degrees in University System of Georgia institutions for teachers of children, birth to age 5, and to develop an articulation agreement with the Technical College System of Georgia so that in-service teachers with a two-year program from DTAE may transfer seamlessly into USG baccalaureate programs.

Collaborative Induction of Beginning Teachers through GSTEP

The initiative, with leadership from the National Commission on Teaching and America's Future, builds on the Regents' requirement that USG educator preparation institutions provide support for their graduates during their first two years in the classroom.

Cross Cultural Teaching Initiative

This project partners with Gwinnett County Schools and Georgia State University to develop and deliver a Cross Cultural Endorsement for in-service teachers who will train other teachers in the knowledge, skills, and understandings needed to close the achievement gap between ethnic minority students, economically disadvantaged students, and majority students.

Double the Number and Double the Diversity of Teachers prepared by USG

The Double, Double Initiative builds on prior and ongoing work by the University System to: 1) improve educator preparation programs; and 2) increase the number and diversity of teachers prepared. The Double, Double Initiative represents a third phase of work to become the primary provider of the 14,500 high quality teachers needed in Georgia's public schools by 2010.

Early College is a new model that blends high school and the first two years of college for the purpose of finding more successful ways to educate young people through high school and the completion of some form of post-secondary education, so that more will be prepared to contribute to our knowledge-based economy and attain a higher quality of life.

Recognizing that improving teaching quality is an ongoing, interactive process which begins with recruitment into the profession and continues throughout an educator's career, P-16 Initiatives promote teaching quality throughout the career continuum from recruitment into the profession, through high quality preparation, induction, and professional learning.

Gateway to College

The mission of Gateway to College Academy is to recover high school dropouts, ages 16-20, and get them through two years of college. Gateway will create a window of access for dropouts to find their way back to educational attainment.

This initiative, sponsored by BellSouth, seeks to enhance the economic prosperity and quality of life of Georgians, their communities, and the state by working collaboratively to build premier learning and teaching environments in Georgia's public schools.

The Georgia Framework for Teaching

The P-16 Department of the University System of Georgia; Department of Education; and the Professional Standards Commission have collaborated through the Georgia Committee on Quality Teaching to adopt a common framework for teacher preparation, transition, development, and success. The Georgia Framework for Teaching provides an integrated set of standards to guide the careers of teachers from initial preparation through their first years in the classroom through their continued professional growth.

Georgia's Leadership Institute for School Improvement (GLISI)

GLISI seeks to equip and support educational leaders to drive change for student success. It operates as a public/private partnership determined to create long-term, systemic change which improves the capacity of educational leaders to lead teachers, staff, and their community to improve student achievement.

Middle School Achievement and Interest in Mathematics and Science

Georgia is striving to improve student achievement through all levels of education, especially in science and mathematics. Georgia's mathematics and science scores on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) tests as well as the state's Criterion Referenced Competency Tests (CRCT) illustrate the need for improving student achievement.

Partnership for Reform in Science and Mathematics (PRISM)

PRISM seeks to increase P-12 student achievement in science and mathematics, increase the responsiveness of science and mathematics faculties in higher education to the needs of schools, and close achievement gaps among demographic groups through P-16 Partnerships.

P-16 Data and Analysis Systems

This project involves developing a series of subject-area data marts designed to address the informational and reporting needs of P-16 and its partners. The purposes are: 1) to monitor student progress from pre-school through post-secondary education, and eventually into the labor market, and 2) to provide information to Georgia's educational agencies, institutions, and state and local P-16 councils on the success of various initiatives in improving student learning.

NCTAF/GSU

The National Committee on Teaching and America's Future Initiative (NCTAF) is designed to help new teachers during their transition from pre-service learning through the early years of teaching. The model is based on the integrative Georgia Framework for Teaching and supports the creation of strong cross-career professional learning communities within and across schools to attract and retain new teachers to high need schools and encourage their professional growth across the career continuum.

Destination Teaching

Teacher Preparation Recruitment Initiative

This project seeks to increase the number and diversity of University System of Georgia prepared teachers who will teach in high need school systems. The Initiative, called "Destination: Teaching -- Customized Pathways to get you there" initially targets people who want to change careers and move into teaching (including paraprofessionals) and is designed to help meet the state's increasing need for teachers.

Reading Consortium

USG Reading Consortium

A statewide consortium of reading faculty from 14 participating USG institutions developed a Reading Endorsement program designed to provide professional learning in literacy instruction for classroom teachers. The USG Reading Consortium offers courses through Summer Institute, distance learning, and on-campus models.
