STARS Financial Support

In 2003, the Board of Regents created STARS (STudents Abroad with Regents' Support) program to provide financial assistance to students pursuing academic studies in other countries. STARS awards are funded jointly by the Board of Regents and University System of Georgia (USG) institutions that participate in the program. In order to qualify for a STARS award, a student must:

  • be in good academic standing at one of the USG institutions that participates in the STARS program;
  • be enrolled in a degree-seeking program (associate, baccalaureate or graduate degree); and
  • have made an application to study abroad.

There may be other campus or program requirements for STARS awards. Students are requested to check with their Campus Study Abroad office.

There are 3 types of STARS awards: STARS Work and Study Abroad Stipends, STARS Global Ambassador Travel Grants, STARS Study Abroad Assistantships.

  • STARS Work and Study Abroad Stipends
    Students can earn up to $1,000 per semester from special on-campus student employment. Students may elect to have their earnings credited directly toward program costs. Employment assignments vary; many include assisting with study abroad promotion and recruitment.
  • STARS Global Ambassador Travel Grants
    Qualified students with mature leadership skills may apply for grants that reimburse up to $500 of travel expenses for study abroad programs. Grant recipients will participate in service activities abroad that must involve direct engagement by the student with citizens of the host country and must be in addition to normal study abroad program activities.
  • STARS Study Abroad Assistantships
    Selected USG study abroad programs offer on-site assistantships of up to $800 for qualified, enrolled students to perform a variety of key support roles in program administration, residence life, course research, co-curricular events, and other activities. Assistantship duties performed by the student must be in addition to normal study abroad program activities.
