Regents' On-Line Language Initiative
This Regents’ On-Line Language Initiative enables students enrolled at USG institutions to register for on-line foreign-language programs in Chinese, Japanese and Russian. These on-line programs are aimed at exposing students to less commonly taught foreign languages through a flexible schedule. Each on-line language program involves a 4-semester course sequence as follows:
Chinese
- CHIN1001 - Elementary Chinese I
- CHIN1002 - Elementary Chinese II
- CHIN2001 - Intermediate Chinese I
- CHIN2002 - Intermediate Chinese II
Japanese
- JAPN1001 - Elementary Japanese I
- JAPN1002 - Elementary Japanese II
- JAPN2001 - Intermediate Japanese I
- JAPN2002 - Intermediate Japanese II
Russian
- RUSS1001 - Elementary Russian I
- RUSS1002 - Elementary Russian II
- RUSS2001 - Intermediate Russian I
- RUSS2002 - Intermediate Russian II
In addition to the on-line foreign-language courses, enrolled students are provided technical assistance and interactive linguistic and tutorial services. The courses use multi-media design such as streaming audio and video, as well as recorded exercises to deliver the instruction. Regents' On-Line Language scholarships are available to students who successfully complete different stages of the on-line language programs.
In 2001, the University System of Georgia received a four-year grant from the U.S. Department of Defense's National Security Education Program (NSEP) to fund foreign language education online. The USG project, titled “On-Line Interactive Multimedia Instruction in Japanese, Chinese and Russian,” was among seven grant recipients selected in an independent, merit-based national competition from among nearly 100 initial applications.
