2003-2004 Select Charge to the Council

University System of Georgia
Council on International Education

The Council is charged this year to give primary attention to the strengthening and improvement of existing USG international programs and services.  Many new, groundbreaking programs and policies have been established in the University System during the past few years, driven by the Board of Regents strong commitment to international education.  It is appropriate to consolidate these recent achievements and focus on their full implementation at all campuses.  Specifically, the individual members of the Council who represent the 34 constituent institutions of the University System of Georgia are asked to complete the following assignments:

  • Improve intra-institutional communications about USG international education programs, policies, and procedures, so that all members of the campus community (students, faculty, and staff) are aware of the many international opportunities and support services available to them;
  • Strengthen participation in the Council’s three open-membership committees (study abroad, international students & scholars, and faculty & curriculum) by encouraging appropriate members of the campus community to engage in the discussions, meetings, and actions of each group;
  • Provide campus leadership in achieving the institutional study abroad targets presented to the Board in August 2003, which collectively will result in 25% of undergraduate degree recipients having an overseas academic experience by 2007;
  • Achieve full implementation of the new STudents Abroad with Regents Support (STARS) funding programs to obtain maximum benefit from these matching funds;
  • Encourage academic units and degree programs to consider how they might move toward the standards of excellence identified in the USG’s Best Practices in International Education awards competition.
