USG Presents Social Business Workshop at Georgia Gwinnett College

Atlanta — March 2, 2012

Seven student teams from Georgia colleges and universities will convene at Georgia Gwinnett College for a March 3 Social Business Workshop, initiated by the University System of Georgia (USG). The teams will meet with several mentors from Atlanta-area businesses interested in supporting social businesses in the state.

The teams were selected as having the best student-generated social business ideas during a state-wide social business plan competition hosted by the Board of Regents last October. The student teams were required to create proposals addressing community issues and promoting job creation within local communities.

Institutions represented in the workshop include Fort Valley State University, Gainesville State College, Georgia Gwinnett College, Georgia State University, Southern Polytechnic State University and Valdosta State University.

Small teams of mentors will review each team’s business plan and presentation while providing feedback to the students. Then, all teams will make formal presentations to compete for one of two slots in the 10-week Village Capital-Atlanta funding competition. The April-June event offers a chance to win a $50,000 business investment.

The workshop is hosted by GGC in collaboration with the USG and TiE-Atlanta. TiE-Atlanta is the local branch of The IndUS Entrepreneurs (TiE), a global, not-for-profit organization created for the advancement of entrepreneurship.
