University System of Georgia Sets Tuition for 2015-16 Academic Year

Atlanta — April 14, 2015

Today, the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia (USG) approved the tuition rates for the 2015-16 academic year.

For the last three academic years, the USG has kept tuition increases as low as possible, and again, this year 20 of the USG’s colleges and universities will keep their tuition increase to 2.5 percent. Ten USG institutions will have varying tuition rate increases for the specific needs of that university or college.

“To ensure we can continue to offer quality public higher education, we must continue to invest in our institutions,” said Chancellor Hank Huckaby. “We have carefully assessed the tuition rates for our institutions to make sure we are balancing the increasing costs of providing public higher education while keeping tuition and fees as affordable as possible.”

The USG institutions with a tuition increase of 2.5 percent are:

  • Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College
  • Albany State University
  • Armstrong Atlantic State University
  • Bainbridge State College
  • Clayton State University
  • College of Coastal Georgia
  • Columbus State University
  • Dalton State College
  • Darton State College
  • East Georgia State College
  • Fort Valley State University
  • Georgia Highlands College
  • Georgia Perimeter College
  • Georgia Southern University
  • Georgia Southwestern State University
  • Gordon State College
  • Savannah State University
  • South Georgia State College
  • University of West Georgia
  • Valdosta State University

Rates for the 10 USG institutions with varying tuition percentage increases are:

  • Atlanta Metropolitan State College – 9.0 percent
  • Georgia College & State University – 3.0 percent
  • Georgia Gwinnett College – 8.3 percent
  • Georgia Institute of Technology – 9.0 percent
  • Georgia Regents University – 5.5 percent
  • Georgia State University – 5.5 percent
  • Kennesaw State University – 4.4 percent
  • Middle Georgia State University – 9.0 percent

The research institutions, including the Georgia Institute of Technology and the University of Georgia, require more investment in order to provide the academic programs, offerings and student services that are essential as leading and nationally-ranked research universities. Each of the regional and state universities and colleges in the list has a specific need for its varying tuition rate increase.

Because of the state’s support, the USG is continuing to balance the costs of public higher education at approximately 50 percent state funding and 50 percent tuition.

“Our University System continues to offer some of the lowest tuition rates among our peer state public higher education systems,” said John Brown, USG vice chancellor for fiscal affairs. “For example, out of the 16 states that make up the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB), our University System is the seventh lowest in tuition and fees for four-year institutions.”

At today’s Board meeting, the University System also set student fees for the upcoming academic year. The USG has worked with each of the institutions to reduce the number of fee increases, which must demonstrate a clear need. In recent years, the number of approved mandatory fee increases from USG institutions dropped from 67 in Fiscal Year 2012 down to 22 this upcoming year, Fiscal Year 2016.
