Statement from Board on US Supreme Court Ruling in Michigan Affirmative Action Case

Atlanta — June 23, 2003

Responding to today’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling on the use of affirmative action in college admissions by the University of Michigan, University System of Georgia Chancellor Thomas C. Meredith said on behalf of the Board of Regents: “While we have not had the opportunity to review the full text of what is a lengthy ruling, based upon the media reports, we are pleased with the court’s decision in the University of Michigan case. We understand that there are qualifiers included in the ruling, but it does appear that the decision provides greater flexibility to us in our goal of providing broad access to our colleges and universities. This decision has been long awaited by the higher education community and provides direction on how to pursue the goal of creating a diverse student body.”
