Newly Named Chancellor-Designate of the University System of Georgia

WHAT: A Special Called Meeting of the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, December 8, 2005. The meeting will be conducted in Executive Session to discuss the appointment of the new chancellor of the University System of Georgia. A press conference will follow.

WHEN: THE TIME OF THE PRESS CONFERENCE HAS BEEN CHANGED FROM 11:00 A.M. TO 10:30 A.M., Thursday, December 8, 2005

After the Executive Session, the regents will reconvene in Open Session AT 10:30 A.M., at which time they will take action on the appointment of the new chancellor. A press conference will follow to formally introduce the new chancellor-designate.

WHY: Since August of this year, the Board of Regents has conducted a national search to fill the position vacated by former University System of Georgia Chancellor Thomas Meredith, who resigned to accept a position heading the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning. Interim Chancellor Corlis Cummings presently heads the University System.

In accordance with the Open Meetings Act, Board of Regents Chair J. Timothy Shelnut will announce the appointment of the chancellor-designate of the University System of Georgia in the Open Session of the board meeting. During the press conference, the new chancellor-designate will be formally introduced. The search committee chair, Elridge McMillan, will join BOR Chairman Shelnut and the chancellor-designate at the press conference. After comments from the two chairs, the chancellor-designate will make remarks, and the floor will be opened for questions.
