Five System Institutions Partner with Georgia G.L.O.B.E. to Make Distance Learning Accessible

Atlanta — June 29, 2000

Five University System of Georgia (USG) colleges and universities will offer online courses and telecourses during the Fall 2000 academic term through Georgia G.L.O.B.E., the University System of Georgia’s distance learning initiative.

The institutions that are Affiliates of Georgia G.L.O.B.E. are Clayton College & State University, Columbus State University, Floyd College, State University of West Georgia and Valdosta State University. Registration for online courses begins July 5 on the Georgia G.L.O.B.E. (Global Learning Online for Business and Education) Web site at www.georgiaglobe.org. Telecourses will be announced July 15.

Georgia G.L.O.B.E. is designed to offer one-stop access to class registration, online classes, class materials and telecourses from USG schools. Georgia Public Broadcasting (GPB) will air the telecourses over Georgia Public Television (GPTV) and the PeachStar Satellite Network. Through Georgia G.L.O.B.E., students will be able to get information about college courses, degree programs and financial aid, complete the enrollment processes, and then access online courses they wish to take.

The Fall 2000 term online will include the eCore®, which are courses designed to meet some freshmen and sophomore requirements. Currently, only the five Georgia G.L.O.B.E. Affiliates offer eCore® courses via the World Wide Web and as telecourses.

“Georgia G.L.O.B.E. and its Affiliates are breaking down barriers to higher education that many students face,” said Dr. Richard A. Skinner, president and CEO of Georgia G.L.O.B.E. “Technology is allowing students who cannot attend traditional classes on campus to have an opportunity to take college courses.”

The five USG institutions designated as an Affiliate agree to accept standards for both students and courses. Students must be admitted as regular students to an Affiliate institution, and courses must meet the Principles of Good Practice, established by the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB).

For more information about registering for online courses and telecourses through Georgia G.L.O.B.E., see its Web site at www.georgiaglobe.org or call 1-888-404-2740.
