Does TU have any experience directly related to medical school expansions?
Yes. We are the nation’s leading medical education planning organization, having conducted national studies for the Association of American Medical colleges and individual medical school expansion studies in including one for the University of Arizona that led to the successful development of the “Phoenix Program” an expansion of the University of Arizona-College of Medicine in partnership with Arizona State University.
Over the past five years, Tripp Umbach has also provided feasibility studies for proposed medical schools in Florida, Pennsylvania, Texas, Michigan, California and Minnesota. Tripp Umbach is currently conducting a similar expansion study for the State of Connecticut.
In addition, Tripp Umbach has completed projects for more than 50 of the top 100 academic medical centers ranked in the 2007 U.S. News & World Report.
Who led the Tripp Umbach team?
Paul Umbach, founder and president of Tripp Umbach serves as the Principal in Charge of the Medical Education Expansion project in Georgia and was personally involved in all aspects of the planning and on site in the state of Georgia nearly every week during the project. The team involved a total of 12 professions from Tripp Umbach and two subcontractors, namely Burt Hill and Smith Group, two of the nation’s leading medical school planning firms.
How was TU chosen for this project?
Tripp Umbach was retained by the Medical College of Georgia in September 2007 following a rigorous selection process that began in July 2007 with the Board of Regent’s issuance of Request for Proposals for a Medical School Expansion Study.
What was TU’s process in reaching its conclusions?
Tripp Umbach undertook a multi-pronged methodology to complete its evaluation for expanding Georgia’s medical education.
We assessed multiple sites throughout the state of Georgia for potential MCG expansion by analyzing and evaluating the feasibility of leveraging existing facilities as well as assessing site expansion locations. We also assessed the number of faculty and staff required for education, research, student services and clinical needs of expansions. We determined capital costs associated with expanding at all suggested locations including land acquisition, construction and renovations. We also provided a course of action and an economic impact assessment as well. We considered opportunities for community collaborations and partnerships.
