Institution Overview
Founded in 1889, Georgia College & State University is located in the center of Milledgeville, Georgia's 19th-century capital. Designated by the University System as Georgia's public liberal arts university, this residential institution offers students a challenging array of 58 undergraduate degree programs and 32 graduate-level programs in the schools of liberal arts and sciences, business, education and health sciences. It is consistently recognized as one of the nation’s best universities by U.S. News & World Report, The Princeton Review, and Kiplinger’s.
At the core of its mission is Georgia College’s commitment to produce graduates who are well prepared for careers or advanced study and who are instilled with exceptional qualities of mind and character. This includes developing graduates with inquisitive, analytical minds, who have a respect for human diversity and individuality, possess a sense of civic and global responsibility, carry sound ethical principles, have effective writing, speaking, and quantitative skills, and enjoy a healthy lifestyle. At the heart of the university's core curriculum are interdisciplinary courses which integrate aspects of liberal arts studies across all majors in a way that endows its graduates with a passion for achievement, lifelong curiosity, and exuberance for learning.
The campus occupies 43 acres within the City of Milledgeville, with facilities for athletics, recreation and outdoor education located nearby on an additional 600 acres. With its blend of majestic red brick buildings and white Corinthian columns, the campus appeals to those seeking a classic academic environment in which to pursue a comprehensive program of higher education. The university’s campus also features the recently restored Old Governor's Mansion, a national historic landmark that serves as an educational center and museum.
As part of its mission, the university also offers high-quality graduate programs designed to help build a qualified work force for central Georgia. These classes are held at the university’s central campus in Milledgeville, as well as at its Center for Graduate and Professional Learning in downtown Macon, and at the Robins Air Force Base in Warner Robins.
The university enrolls more than 6,200 undergraduate and graduate students, ninety percent of whom come from Georgia. Additionally, individuals from 19 other states and 12 foreign nations attend the university. Students living on campus are offered a range of opportunities, including Residential Learning Communities that allow participants to bond academically through clustered classes, field trips, and service-learning projects as part of their on-campus residential experience.
A wide variety of extra-curricular pursuits engage students outside of class, including concerts, plays, fine arts exhibitions, honor societies, debates, student media, social fraternities and sororities, as well as other clubs and organizations. Each year, students from Georgia College expand their learning and leadership through their extraordinary level of community service, providing thousands of hours of assistance to organizations and non-profit groups. The university also offers an extensive array of sports, competing in NCAA Division II Peach Belt Conference basketball, baseball, softball, tennis, golf and cross-country.
The university is nationally known to many for its most famous alumna, Flannery O'Connor, and is the repository for many of her manuscripts. It also holds the Peace Corps and other papers of the late U.S. Sen. Paul Coverdell.
The university was founded by the State of Georgia in 1889 as a women's college. In 1967, it became a regional, co-educational college. In 1996, the college assumed its current name and was designated as Georgia's Public Liberal Arts University. Today, Georgia College alumni can be found in top leadership positions in the fields of education, the arts, health services, public administration, and at prominent companies nationwide such as GEICO, Georgia Power, YKK Corporation and the Women’s Entertainment Television Network.
