GALILEO Statistics Archive and Reporting Tool Revision Project 2003-2004
The objective of the GALILEO Statistics Archive and Reporting Tool Revision Project is to revise the GALILEO statistics generator as recommended by the Vendor Performance Assessment Committee (VPAC), providing the ability to gather, archive, and report both local GALILEO and vendor-provided statistics in accordance with VPAC standards.
Background
GALILEO usage statistics are very important to both the GALILEO user communities and to the GALILEO initiative. They provide an objective means of measurement for success of the initiative and individual resources, and are fundamental to accountability reports, assessment, and pricing. Unfortunately, the change to vendor interfaces has created challenges for the collection and presentation of statistics.
GALILEO continues to provide statistics for most databases on GALILEO servers and for menu-selections of vendor databases. However, at this time, searching statistics for all vendor-interface databases, including the most popular EBSCOHost, ProQuest, and FirstSearch databases, are not readily available. In addition, some locally-loaded databases are not currently providing search-level statistics. Therefore, reports through the familiar GALILEO statistics generator lack significant amounts of data from the period of October 1999 to the present.
GALILEO has requested that its vendors supply monthly statistical reports, but has not yet had significant compliance. While the GALILEO staff has been able to collect some usage statistics manually from vendor sites, a large amount of usage data is not and has not been captured. In addition, there is not presently a mechanism for merging the vendor statistics with the local statistics. In 2002, the GALILEO Vendor Performance Assessment Committee reviewed the GALILEO statistics generator, current vendor statistical practices, and the ICOLC Standards for the Provision of Statistics (endorsed by GALILEO Steering Committee), and developed a set of standards and recommendations for changes to the GALILEO statistics generator in order for it to conform to these standards.
The data elements collected by the current GALILEO Statistics Generator are very comprehensive and detailed. The statistics provided by most GALILEO vendors are inconsistent in both content and terminology. In making their recommendations, the VPAC sought to identify a common terminology and the most meaningful and commonly occurring statistics. Therefore, a major aspect of the project involves renaming and consolidating already archived data. Other major components of the project include mapping the various vendors' statistics to the new terminology; identifying means of collection; programming automated collection mechanisms where possible; building programmatic manual collection efforts where necessary; programming capture of search statistics for local databases which are not currently logged at this detail; enhancing the interface of the reporting tool; and providing documentation for use and interpretation of statistics.
