OIIT Emergency Communication Service (ECS)
Overview
OIIT has an Emergency Communication Service (ECS) that provides initial, single notification through a wireless device, such as a cell phone or pager, to key University System of Georgia (USG) institution functional and technical staff, and then situational updates through a web site, status.usg.edu.
OIIT will use this service to announce emergency, unplanned events that result in major or extended loss of access to or service provided by an OIIT Enterprise (hosted) application, service, or infrastructure resource.
The service will augment rather than replace existing functional and technical product and service communication channels such as e-mail based list services. ECS subscription is voluntary.
How the Service Works
In an emergency, OIIT will deliver an initial one-time, one-way emergency announcement (as a short text message) posted through a topic based listserv and targeted for wireless, mobile communication devices (cell phones, pagers, etc).
OIIT will provide subsequent situational status/updates through two self-service options: Telephone based service information message through the OIIT Helpdesk call center (706-583-2001 or 1-888-875-3697, toll free within Georgia), and the web based service information site status.usg.edu.
Audience
The service is designed for key USG institution staff or contact points. While a broad USG audience is desired, the service is not intended for all application or service users across each campus, only key staff that must know, and can then post and share information at their institution or provide the status.usg.edu URL to their staff.
