Area F Guidelines: Journalism and Mass Communication

(including Broadcasting, Public Relations, Advertising, Magazines, Newspapers, Telecommunications, and Publication Management)

REVISED REQUIREMENTS
The following revised requirements go into effect for students entering in summer, 2002 or later. To facilitate transfer, institutions should make the revised curriculum available and encourage students to follow it as soon as possible.

Eighteen hours of lower-division (1000- and 2000-level) courses:

Introduction to Mass Communication 0 to 4 hours
Basic News Writing 0 to 4 hours
Communication and Computer Literacy
Basic speech, creative or technical writing, introduction to human communication, computer and information technology, communication research (These courses may not be from the areas of journalism, public relations, telecommunications, new media, publication management, magazines, newspapers, or advertising.)
0 to 9 hours
Foreign Language
Minimum of three hours at the 1000 or higher level (Note: additional foreign language hours may be encouraged in Restricted Electives below)
3 to 6 hours
Restricted Electives
Humanities, social sciences, fine arts, business, foreign language courses deemed appropriate to the major, economics, accounting, anthropology, art, classical culture, history, comparative literature, drama, English, geography, philosophy, political science, psychology, religion, sociology, speech communications, statistics (These courses may not be from the areas of journalism, public relations, mass communication, telecommunications, new media, publication management, magazines, newspapers, or advertising.)
0 to 18 hours
Total 18 hours
NOTE: Experiential credit such as internship or practicum credit is not applicable in Area F, although the Introduction to Mass Communication and Basic News Writing classes could include applied components.

AREA F GUIDELINES: Journalism and Mass Communication

The following guidelines will be replaced effective summer, 2001:

Eighteen (18) hours of lower-division (100- and 200-level) courses related to journalism and mass communication and courses prerequisite to higher level courses:

Written and Oral Expression
This may include basic news writing, basic speech, creative       
or other technical writing courses, introduction to human
communication, technical writing.
3 to 9 hours
Foreign Language
Three hours at the 100 level (Note: additional foreign
language hours may be encouraged in Electives below)
3 to 6 hours
Electives
Including humanities, social sciences, fine arts, business,
foreign language courses deemed appropriate to the
major, economics, accounting, anthropology, art, classical
culture, history, comparative literature, drama, English,
geography, philosophy, political science, psychology,
religion, sociology, speech communications, statistics.
3 to 9 hours
Media Literacy and Computer literacy
This may include introduction to mass communications,
mass media and society, introduction to computer
information systems, communication research and
information technology.
3 to 6 hours
Total 18 hours
