Meeting Minutes: Committee on Sociology, Anthropology & Social Work

Minutes of the Regents' Advisory Committee on Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work
Jekyll Island, Georgia
November 13, 2003 (Approved)

Michelle McCormick, Chair-Elect, called the meeting to order at 4:00 pm, and officiated at the request of the Chair, since he had been unable to attend the meeting of the Regents' Advisory Executive Committees in October.

The attendance sheet was circulated.

Committee Reports: None

Nominations from the floor were requested for Chair-Elect by McCormick. Kevin Demmitt was nominated and elected by acclamation.

McCormick read the Regents' FY 2004 Charge to the Academic Advisory Committees and opened discussion on how to begin to implement the Charge, notably in regards to:

  • Reviewing Area for each program for which the committee has responsibility to ascertain whether all schools are in compliance with the Area F Recommendations

  • Developing system-wide general learning outcomes for all core courses (Area E) for which the committee has responsibility, namely ANTH 1102, SOCI 1101, and SOCI 1160

McCormick proposed that a review of all schools' Area F courses for the majors of sociology, anthropology, and social work be conducted. Ned Rinalducci volunteered to coordinate this effort. The proposal and Rinalducci's role as coordinator were approved by the committee.

McCormick then proposed that she initiate and coordinate over the next year via email a discussion aimed at developing a set of general learning outcomes for SOCI 1101, with the goal of reaching a consensus by the next annual meeting in 2004. A similar effort for ANTH 1102 and SOCI 1160 would be scheduled for 2005. This proposal was also approved by the committee.

McCormick then asked if anyone had any further business to bring before the committee. There was no further business, and the meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,

Michelle McCormick
