Meeting Minutes: Committee on Political Science

Minutes of the Regents Academic Advisory Committee
on Political Science (POLS RAC)
February 22, 2001

  1. Meeting called to order at 1:15 p.m. by Dr. Ben Tate, Macon State. Agenda was distributed and no new items added.

  2. Each participant was then asked to introduce him or herself and to identify his or her institution. The following institutions were represented:

  3. Agenda item #1. RAC members received, reviewed, discussed and made suggestions for revision to a questionnaire designed by Ben Tate. The subject is the duties and qualifications of teachers of Political Science in two-year programs.

  4. Discussion arose from the questionnaire on summer pay and the regents policy. A motion was made, seconded and passed to seek a specific statement of Regents policy from Dr. Daniel Papp. Jack Waskey as Chair for 2002-2003 will direct the inquiry.

  5. Agenda item #2 on USG program review. Discussion was made of the practice of program reviews in the USG. Questions arose from a member uncertain about the process. All those who spoke on the issue felt it was a serious work, but also very helpful and overall a positive experience.

  6. Agenda item #3 on the general status of the profession. In discussion, most member felt that the status and pay is weak compared to the value they assign to what Political Scientists do.

    Concern was expressed about teaching loads at two-year units in each institutions. The members were polled and loads were

    The loads are institutional decisions and not Regents policy. This was set as a subject of investigation.

  7. Information was distributed by Dr. Harold Cline of Georgia Middle College concerning Global Partnership Program. Positive remarks were made by several familiar with the program.

  8. Motion made, seconded and passed to change the term of the chair of Pols - Rac to 2-yr. Term.

  9. Executive Committee of Pols - RAC was recognized as the Chairs of the past two years

    • Drs. Harold Cline and Ben Tate
    • Also Dr. Waskey, as Chair for 2002-2003 will serve as the Chair of the Executive Committee.
    • Also addition members to be appointed by the chair as needed.
  10. Dr. Waskey was recognized the chair for 2001 - 2003.

  11. A motion of thanks to chair Ben Tate was approved with applause.

  12. Discussion was made that the meeting begin at 2 p.m. instead of 1:00 p.m. at the Mulberry Inn in Savannah January 31, 2002.

  13. Motion to adjourn was approved without exception.
