Meeting Minutes, November 5, 1999

Time: Friday 10:30 B Noon
Place: Armstrong Atlantic State University

Welcome and Introductions: Chair Dr. Mary Ann Reichenbach welcomed all.

Order of Business: Chair Dr. Mary Ann Reichenbach reminded all that voting was to be one vote per institution, by the representative or designee only.

Reports
  1. Medical technology- Lester Hardigree- 2 BSN programs have closed leaving 2 BS programs in the state. Enrollment is at 50%. There is employer demand for graduates with sign on bonuses.
  2. Physical Therapy- David Lake- There are issues in licensure esam reporting . Currently there are 4 PT schools and 4 PTA schools in the state. Employment for PTA's is down and also a decline in the number of applicants. Issues include non PTs supervising PTAs and direct access to services but not to treatment. Scholarships are available for students. Currently PT schools are graduating more students that there is a demand for in the market.
  3. Nursing- Diane Crane- A report is being prepared for the regents office on the faculty shortage in Georgia. The LPN-RN articulation model has been developed. China trip participant selection process has been determined. A motion was made as follows: "It is moved that the Core Area D requirements for nursing should include any institution-approved lab sequence and not be restricted to chemistry and physics." Discussion centered on transfer students. Dr. Reichenbach was asked to include rationale with the report to the Board of Regents. Motion carried unanimously.

Dr. John Wolfe - priorities in academic affairs are technology, benchmarking, and core curriculum issues. A faculty development calendar is on the web page- www.deai.peachnet.edu\calendar With the increasing admissions standards issues include improving student learning and retention and graduation. The governor's committee will be reporting on their work soon. Each individual institution determines faculty workloads and their calculations. Program review will begin with new programs reviewed in the third year. E-core issues include transferrability, registration, and tuition. If proposing a new program documentation is needed for 1. Need- regional, local, and state. Give details on surveys. 2. Kinds of jobs the graduates will have. 3. Funding- no funding is given for new programs from the Regents. Connect funding to other units. 4. Credentials and complement of faculty.

Jim Repella- We need a group to look at manpower needs for health care professionals in the state. Is funding available?

Dr. Wolfe- Yes as a collaborative grant.

Jim Repella moved that a group be formed to study the manpower needs for health care professionals in Georgia. Seconded by Cathy Rozmus. Approved unanimously.

China Trip Jim Repella discussed the need for raising money from outside the system and increasing nonsystem involvement. The trip includes students and faculty. 
Interdisciplinary On-Line Course

Jim Repella introduced the idea that a project for the AACHP could be the development of an interdisciplinary on-line course.

Linda Wright suggested that instead of a course a web site with case studies that could be used for any discipline. The idea was supported and will be discussed at the next meeting.

Next Meeting The next meeting will be in Spring 2000.
The meeting will be at Valdosta State. The Executive Committee will plan the meeting.
