Minutes of Meeting held April 24, 1998
Attending: Chair Emma Simon, Armstrong Atlantic University; Paul Beyer, Columbus State University; Gary Bond, Medical College of Georgia; Patricia Carrell, Georgia State University; Dick Diebolt, Georgia Southern University; Diane Fennig, Augusta State University; Lee W. Formwalt, Albany State University; Wayne Glowka, Georgia College and State University; Greg Hawven, Georgia Southwestern State University; Chuck Hudson, Valdosta State University; Jack O. Jenkins, State University of West Georgia; Maureen Kilroy, Georgia Institute of Technology; Marilyn Newhoff, University of Georgia; Alfred Owens, Armstrong Atlantic State University; Parris Smith, Georgia College and State University; Lynda Woodruff, North Georgia College and State University; and, Robert Yancy, Southern Polytechnic State University.
The meeting was held at Villas by the Sea, Jekyll Island, GA, site of the 1998 Leadership Development Seminar. Chair Emma Simon called the meeting to order at 4:45 PM.
Approval of Minutes
The minutes from the March 27, 1998 meeting of the ACOGW were approved.
Leadership Development Committee Reports
Bob Yancy, chair of the seminar, indicated that Villas by the Sea failed to provide us with the contracted
number of rooms. Emma Simon related the sequence of events leading up to the problems with our
reservations. Villas by the Sea failed to notify us regarding their changes from our contractual
arrangements. Emma will negotiate with the appropriate company officials for fair and appropriate
financial compensation. It was strongly recommended that other accommodations be identified for next
year's seminar.
Gary Bond indicated that the packets and nametags were ready and being distributed to the guests and participants. Alfred Owens outlined the various recreational activities and the arrangements for the hospitality suite and disc jockey. Dick Diebolt provided copies of the evaluation form that participants are being asked to complete.
Institutional Use of Graduate Tuition Funds
Emma Simon distributed copies of a summary report relating how our institutions use the graduate
tuition funds that are returned to us by the Chancellor's office.
Annual Report
Emma Simon reported that she would file an Annual Report to the central office that summarizes the
activities of the ACOGW for the past year.
Selection of Chair Elect
Ken Jones of Georgia College and State University will serve as Chair-elect of our committee for the
1998-1999 academic year.
South Carolina's Deans' Meeting
Paul Beyer reported on the activities of the South Carolina Deans' Meeting that was held at the Isle of
Palms. Three major areas addressed at the meeting were 1) top graduate activities on each campus, 2)
graduate certificate programs, and 3) the potential impact on institutions' enrollment caused by the
anticipated increase of 100 new graduate institutions in China by 2010.
The committee acknowledged the strong support and leadership provided during the past year by the chair of our committee, Emma Simon.
The meeting was adjourned at 5:30 PM.
