The Council again endorsed the policy of not allowing orientation courses as part of the degree requirements in the core curriculum. Institutions wishing to offer orientation courses may do so, but they must be outside of the required 120-hour degree program.
* After a rather spirited debate, the Council renewed its conviction that courses designed solely for honors students should not be allowed in the core curriculum. Sections of courses that are designated for honors students are acceptable.
Dan Papp spoke to the Council about undertaking a review of general education as part of the Retention, Progression and Graduation Initiative. He asked the Council to look at the composition, delivery, and quality and rigor of general education. He also asked that the Council examine general education for preparing students for education and work in the 21st century. Considerations of transferability between USG institutions will still be of paramount importance. In order to accomplish this work, the Council will expand participation on a temporary, ad hoc basis to include additional faculty who teach courses in the core curriculum.
The Council thanked Bob Haney and Dorothy Leland for hosting the meeting at Georgia College & State University. The next meeting is scheduled for March 23-24, 2006 at the University of Georgia.
The meeting adjourned at 11:00 am.
