March 25, 2005 - Discussion items

  1. Consideration of AP scores: The Council discussed the charge to the Academic Committees from Dan Papp regarding the diversity in practice across the System in awarding AP credit. The Council will revisit the issue at the summer meeting.

  2. Relationship of Area A and D mathematics courses: The Council recommended that we ask the Academic Committee on Mathematical Subjects to consider and clarify the relationship between the mathematics courses in Areas A and D, taking into consideration Math 1001.

  3. Request from MCG to teach lab course in Area F: MCG solicited input from the Council on how to provide a 1 hour laboratory in microbiology for students who apply to their B.S. programs in Health Professions but do not have the required microbiology laboratory experience. Since MCG does not teach any core curriculum courses, the Council provided the following options and suggestions:

    1. Ask Augusta State University to offer a 1hour microbiology laboratory course for these students
    2. MCG offer a 1 hour microbiology laboratory course at the 3000-leve for students who need to complete the requirement
    3. Contact the sending institutions who prepare students for transfer to MCG and request that they strengthen their advising
    4. programs for students who plan to enroll in one of the Health Profession Programs at MCG.
  4. Use of 3000-level courses in the core: The issue of offering 3000-level courses in the core was addressed. The Council unanimously agreed that the intention of the Principles and Framework of the Core Curriculum was to allow only 1000- and 2000 level courses to be offered. The Council recommended clarification be included on the USG website.

  5. Common course numbers: In order to be consistent with other courses in the core, the Council recommended that the Academic Committee on Philosophy be asked to submit common course numbers, titles and descriptions for courses in the core curriculum.

  6. The Council reiterated its previous decision that sign language cannot be used to fulfill a foreign language requirement.

The Council thanked Jackie Thornberry for hosting the meeting and for the gracious hospitality of GPC. The next meeting is scheduled for July 2005. The meeting adjourned at 11:00 am.
