Council on General Education
Meeting Minutes
March 1, 2001
Macon State College
Present: James A. Burran, Timothy Crimmins (for William Fritz), Valerie M. D'Ortona, James Fletcher, Shirley Hall, Robert W. Haney, John Lupold, Jack Morrell, Joseph H. Silver, Sr., Gregory J. Stewart, Cathie Mayes Hudson, Kathleen Burk
Absent: Tommy Joe Anderson
President Jim Burran called the meeting to order and introduced Dr. Dorothy Zinsmeister, Senior Associate for Academic Affairs with the University System Office.
MINI-CORE PROJECT: Dr. Zinsmeister presented information about the Mini-Core project, which involves common courses in Area A for transfer between USG and DTAE institutions. Members emphasized the need for follow-up and assessment of the progress of students transferring mini-core courses. In addition to information on the success of students transferring, the members requested monitoring of the impact on two-year colleges, the numbers of students participating, and student requests for transient permission to take mini-core courses at DTAE.
AREA D.II: There was a continuation of the discussion of whether calculus should be required in Area D. II.or whether individual majors could have such a requirement. The Academic Committee on Math has requested that students in math education be required to take Calculus I in Area D. The Academic Committee on Biology has requested that calculus not be specified for Area D. The other academic committees in the sciences will be asked whether they want to require Calculus I in Area D, and an attempt will be made to develop a policy that is not specific to each major.
"TWO TRIG" ISSUE: There has been some confusion about trigonometry courses in the core curriculum. At some institutions, trigonometry is designed to prepare students for calculus, while at other institutions it does not. The core curriculum guidelines state that institutions may have trigonometry courses that serve as an immediate prerequisite for Calculus I and that completion of such courses will be regarded as completion of pre-calculus in Area A. The committee members agreed that institutions do not need approval to add such trigonometry courses to Area A, but the course catalog and the institution's listing of Area A courses on the core curriculum website should indicate that the trigonometry course in Core Area A meets the pre-calculus requirement. A statement of clarification will be added to the core curriculum guidelines.
DOUBLE-COUNTING CREDIT: There was agreement that a statement should be added to the core curriculum guidelines indicating that a student cannot get credit in two areas of the core curriculum for one course.
